API Fix Ups

In the last week or two we resolved the following problems:
data loading problems (screen shots disappeared, games went missing, release dates went crazy)
performance issues (50 items maximum worked… sometimes…)
Please let us know of any problems in the forums!

Next up: Cute Internet kittens!

Err… Make that API service and parameter errors using in-band reporting.
For instance:

Parameter ‘max’ must be less than or equal to 500

GamePro is thrilled to announce the winner of our API contest, John Herren! Congratulations to John and a big thanks everyone who participated. We’re delighted to see these great applications using the API and hope to see more great work from our API community.

Back in the early Fall we launched a contest for developers to build online applications using the GamePro Playmaker API, a system that provides access to the GamePro database of games, reviews, news, and associated data. Unfortunately, due to a technical error we had been led to believe that no entries had been received by the deadline of Nov 1st. It came to our attention last week that entries had, in fact, been submitted, and we are reviewing each of them now. We apologize for any misunderstanding, and we will be announcing the winner later this week.

We have a couple projects in the works at GamePro API:

Product title search methods
Thumbnail image paths in related media returns
Related video content per product title
a WordPress plugin

We will post about all these items as they roll out. Stay tuned.

Update 9.16.09: Thumbnail image paths have been rolled out, as well as another url for “HD” (higher res) versions of our screen shots.

Few Bug Fixes / Feature changes.

The following things have been addressed:

- Changed Product Data JSON to match content structure.
- Added CDATA to the node in the product xml.
- Fixes for forums session state.

I just wanted to point out a few things that you can do with the GameproAPI. We made it so most people have an entry point to games content.

Bloggers:

For bloggers out there that would like some game content on their blog but don’t really know the inner workings of parsing XML or development there are a few options:

Pre-Made widgets ( http://api.gamepro.com/widgets/ )

These widgets are the easiest way to place content onto your blog or embed in articles. Just find a widget you like, click “Get & Share” and copy the embed code into your post.

Custom Screenshot Gallery Maker ( http://api.gamepro.com/custom-widgets/ )

This is a very cool tool. Lets say you are writing an article about Brutal Legend ( and you should be!) and you would like a screenshot gallery, well it’s pretty easy.

Once embedded you can have a nice little gallery like this!

You can easily search for videos and embed in the same tool.

Note that you can place multiple widgets in a page, but if they have different color themes, the overlay is going to take on the theme of the last widget placed in the page.
